A free, multigenerational music festival celebrating the best of Black Oakland from youth performers to legendary artists
Live at Continental Club
1658 12th St Oakland, CA
School of The Getdown welcomes you for an evening of culture and community celebrating the best of Black Music in Oakland from jazz to blues to hip-hop to R&B and more. This event is all ages and free to the community with advance reservations. Join us at the historic Continental Club, opened in 1945 in West Oakland, where artists like Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Little Richard, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, Otis Redding, Richard Pryor, and Jimmy McCracklin once held court. Recently remodeled and reopened, this historic center for Black culture features a full bar and soul food menu.

Miss Faye and her slammin' trio will showcase her own inimitable renditions drawing from the work of these pioneers in music from the last 100 years from Billy Strayhorn to Little Richard to Sylvester, and more. This evening will feature a special guest appearance from celebrated poet and multidisciplinary artist Avotcja and the debut of a new collaborative video with Miss Faye and Oakland School for the Arts' award-winning youth a cappella ensemble Vocal Rush.

Week 1: March 8, 2020, 6pm: O.G.s of Jazz featuring legends Buster Williams and Azar Lawrence
Join Miss Faye and this all-star quartet in a night of straight ahead swingin, blues, and luscious ballads.
The Bay Area's own The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol, backed by an all-star band of young lions and two of the greatest jazz musicians of our time.
Note: Legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb was originally scheduled to perform, but is unable to participate due to health concerns. In his place we are proud to present saxophone legend Azar Lawrence and young Oakland drum prodigy Genius Wesley. We wish Mr. Cobb a speedy recovery and much health and wellness.
Azar Lawrence is a master saxophonist known for his powerful sound and regarded as the heir to the late John Coltrane. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Patrice Rushen, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, & countless more.
Bassist Buster Williams is known as one of the finest bassists in the world today with a long career performing with icons such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Nancy WIlson, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, The Jazz Crusaders, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, and countless more.

With an all-star ensemble featuring John Santos, Carolyn Brandy, and Jesus Diaz

Dance the night away with Miss Faye and her all-star 8 piece band featuring legendary Bay Area percussionist Pete Escovedo.
This iconic artist has a career of over 60 years breaking down barriers between smooth jazz, salsa, latin jazz, and contemporary music. He has shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Boz Scaggs, Poncho Sanchez, Prince, Anita Baker, George Duke, Tito Puente, Chick Corea, his daughter Sheila E, and many more.
From blues to R&B to sizzling latin sounds, this will be a dance party like no other!

A night of plenty blues, soul, funk, and R&B with this unique intergenerational collaboration.
Rapper Mistah F.A.B. is an Oakland icon known as the Freestyle King. He ignited the Bay Area's Hyphy Movement in the early 2000s, is known for his breakout single "Ghost Ride It" and has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, E-40, Too $hort, and Chris Brown. Today he is known additionally as an entrepreneur, producer, community organizer, and activist.

The Blues Unplugged....An intimate, acoustic, stripped down night of blues, blues, and more blues.
Bobby Rush has been performing the blues for nearly seven decades, since the days of juke joints and the chitlin circuit, performing with Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, & Pinetop Perkins. He is as authentic a bluesman as anyone can be and this lucky audience will be treated to the real blues in its purest form: the man, his voice, and his guitar.

Kito Kamili is opening the concert, generously sharing her unique blend of traditional & contemporary blues. This young O.G. is one of the most authentic & original pianists, vocalists, composers, producers, and educators on the planet. It is an honor for her to open the show at her legendary mama's concert series!
Miss Carol will set the stage with her signature blues renditions after which the legend Bobby Rush will take the stage. Who knows, maybe these two warriors of the blues may even join forces!
